Objective

The purpose of LTI Korea Translation Academy is to train translators to produce good translations that are true to the original text and accessible to target language readership

Description

Centered around hands-on literary translation practice, the program includes lectures on Korean literature, culture, and art, lectures on translation theories, meeting with Korean writers, and trips to places where literary works are set

Applicant Qualifications

Any Korean or non-Korean with a bachelor's degree or higher interested in translating Korean literature.

Target Languages
English, French, German, and Russian (4 languages)
Duration
Three to four lectures a week for 28 weeks (13 hours per week, morning and afternoon lectures on weekdays)
The first semester is from September to December 2009 (14 weeks) and the second semester is from March to June 2010 (14 weeks).

100,000 won (The entire amount will be spent on the trainees)

2. Statement of purpose in Korean (approx. 3 A4 pages)
3. University diploma or certificate of completion from an equivalent program or any degree above Bachelor's degree.
   (attach scanned copy to your application e-mail. and submit the originall document in September)
4. Sample translation of the designated literary work (at least 2 A4 pages in the target language)
※ The designated literary work will be posted to LTI Korea's website notice board.

Number of Program Beneficiaries
Approx. 40 applicants (including 12 fellowship beneficiaries) will be accepted into the program.
Criteria
Review of the applications, writing exam and interview.
Application Deadline and Important Dates
Announcement for applications : May 22, 2009
Submission of applications : June 29 ~ July 12, 2009
Review of applications announced on July 23, 2009
Writing test and interview : July 24 ~ 30, 2009
Final applicants announcement and course registration : August 5 ~ 14, 2009
Course Begins : September 1, 2009
Fellowship Details
- Round-trip plane ticket
- Monthly stipend of KRW 1,200,000 (prepaid monthly)
- Monthly support in educational and cultural expenses (maximum KRW 400,000)
- Assistance in VISA apllication procedures
- Free Registration and Tuition
- Beneficiaries sign an agreement containing details and terms of fellowship
※ Fellowship does not include housing : Housing fees need to be prepared individually. We will help you find rental rooms located within 40 minutes reach by metro/bus from LTI Building ; Single room (personal washing/bathroom/cooking/living zone included in one room of approx. 20㎡)
rent is approx. KRW 600,000 monthly, and a deposit of around KRW 5,000,000 must be paid before move-in. Deposit will be returned when you move out.
Fellowship Period : August 2009 ~ June 2010
Fellowship Application
- Number of beneficiaries : 3 per target language, 12 in total
- Criteria : Reveiw of applications and interview
- Fellowship Applicant Qualifications : Native speaker with bachelor's degree or higher, with deep interest in Korean literature translation, who are residing abroad on the date of Fellowship Announcement (Aprill 1st, 2009), (Foreign students residing in Korea who are expected to leave at the end of June can also apply)

Application Deadline and Important Dates
- Apply between April 1, 2009 ~ May 15, 2009
- Evaluation on applications and interview : May 15, 2009 ~ June 15, 2009
- Notification of successful beneficiaries : June 15, 2009 (via e-mail)
- VISA application and moving to Korea : June 15 ~ August 10, 2009
- Registration : August 10, 2009
- Course begins 1st September, 2009
