Objective

LTI Korea aims to increase appreciation of Korean literature in the global community by building a foundation on which Korean literature may reach foreign readers

Description

LTI Korea supports translation of classic, modern, and contemporary Korean literature. Translators may choose a literary work from the list of Designated Works or Recommended Classics, or they may translate one of their own choosing.

Translation Grants for Works of Individual Choice

Translators may choose any classical, modern, or contemporary Korean literary work and propose to translate it into any language they wish to, unless the book has already been translated into the language of choice.

Translation Grants for Assigned Works

Translators may choose from the twenty-five works on the 2009 LTI Korea Designated Works list and translate into any foreign language save the language or languages into which the work has already been translated.

※ Please refer to the 2009 LTI Korea Designated Works list and the LTI Korea Recommended Classics list. If project intends to translate classical Korean literature written in classical Chinese to modern Chinese, proposal will be evaluated based on the nature of the work in question.

※ In case of grants for Korean classics written in Chinese letters, the grant result will depend on the nature of
the literary work which has been translated.

Applicant Qualifications

Qualified Korean translators or native speakers of the target language

Grant Amount

Approximately 10,000,000 won. (The length of the work will be taken into consideration in deciding the amount of the grant.)

Grant Period

One year (It is possible to extend the grant period for a maximum of one more year if necessary.)

Lenghth of Work

-	The literary work can be a novel, a play, or a collection of essays or poems. The original Korean text must be at least 200 pages (800~1000 pages of manuscript paper) in length. if applicant choose to translate poetry, the original Korean publication must be a collection or a selection of one volume or more in length.

2. Co-translator(s) curriculum vitae (if there are co-translators)

3. Introduction of the original work to be used later to contact potential publishers
- The introduction must be written in the target language and include an introduction of the author(s), the work,
and a synopsis of the work.

4. Statement to explain the reason for selecting the work to be translated

   - The detailed statement should include the translator’s reasons for selecting the original work, an analysis of
     prospective appeal to readers of the target language, and the possibility of publication of the translated work
   - It is also possible to include any objective material that attests to the literary value of the selected work.

5. Detailed time schedule for the translation project

6. Statement of permission from the copyright holder of the literary work

7. Three copies of a sample translation and its original text
   - Poetry : At least 15 poems
   - Novel : 20~30 A4 pages
   - Short story collection : At least one story
   - Other genres : 20~30 A4 pages

- All the applications are available for download from LTI Korea’s website.

- Those proposing to translate one of the Designated Works need to submit 4 and 6 of required application materials

- The applications will not be returned, and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

- The applications by translators who have not submitted the finalized translation of a previous LTI Korea translation grant project will not be accpted.

- Applicants wishing to re-apply for the grant with the same work must submit twice as much sample translation as they have included in their first application

- Deadlines for Works of Individual Choice
Grants are awarded four times a year.

ㆍ Results for applications submitted by March 31, 2009 will be posted by the end of May, 2009.

ㆍ Results for applications submitted by June 31, 2009 will be posted by the end of August, 2009.

ㆍ Results for applications submitted by Sept. 31, 2009 will be posted by the end of Nov, 2009.

ㆍ Results for applications submitted by Dec. 31, 2009 will be posted by the end of Feb, 2010.

ㆍApplications are due August 31, 2009, and results are posted by the end of October, 2009.

Selection Criteria

- The translator’s level of understanding of the original work and the quality of translator’s sample work

- Potential appeal to readers of the target language

- Merits of the original work (Applies to works of individual choice)
